The PubMed Database: The Basic Search

Learn to use PubMed with confidence. Basic, advanced, and MeSH searching. Viewing results and finding full text.

- THE BASIC SEARCH -

To begin a basic search, simply type your keywords into the search box and click Search.

NARROWING YOUR SEARCH

 

- USING PUBMED'S FILTERS -

PubMed's numerous filters appear on the left side of the screen with your search results:

Results by Year & Publication Date

  • Two ways to limit your search results to a span of years.

Text Availability

Don't click either Free full text or Full Text because that will turn off our system that finds full text for you no matter which of our more than 200 databases it's in!

Article Attribute

  • Associated data - Finds additional resources with datasets related to your search.

Article Type

  • There are no filters for peer-reviewed or scholarly journal articles in PubMed.  However, most of the content in PubMed is peer-reviewed and scholarly.  Click the See all article type filters link to see a huge selection of other choices.

Additional Filters

Find even more filters by clicking the Additional filters button including: Article Language, Species, Sex, Age, and Other.

Clear applied filters

  • Clears all selected filters.

Reset filters menu

  • Return to the default filter settings.
