Music Resources: Scores

A guide to locating music resources provided by Pfau Library

Scores in OneSearch

Pfau Library has a variety of scores (printed music).

To find scores and recorded media available in Pfau Library, use OneSearch, limited to "Book & Media CSUSB."

Tip for finding scores

OneSearch has a limiter for Scores. Use it if you don't want any other kinds of material, like books or recordings.

Limiters appear under "Refine my results..."

CSUSB has a large collection of scores online!

  • If you want to see only the online scores, select both Scores and Available Online.
  • If you want to see only hard-copy scores, select both Scores and Available in the Library.

Another tip: Individual Scores vs. Complete Works

If you are looking for particular scores by a famous composer but not finding them, LOOK FOR THE COMPOSER'S COMPLETE WORKS INSTEAD!

Because of the way complete works sets are cataloged, a search for something specific such as:

Mozart strings

string quintet in C minor, K.406

may not result in any hits, even though the library has the relevant score.

INSTEAD, try a search such as this:

Mozart werke

Mozart complete works

***Note: Werke means "works" in German, and many of these large sets come from German publishers.

Once you know where the set is shelved, a trip to the shelf to select the right volume is your next step!

Requesting a score we don't have

If Pfau Library doesn't have a score you need, try broadening your search to Books & Media (All CSU).

If you find a score that a different CSU library owns, you can easily request it for quick delivery using the CSU+ service!

Look for "Request from other CSU libraries (CSU+)" like this:

The request link appears below the item information on your list of OneSearch results.

Click the title, then make sure you sign in so you can use the request option!

CSU+ items usually arrive in 3-5 days, and you can keep them for up to 60 days. You can also request items not owned by any CSU library, but they will take longer to arrive, and you won't be able to keep them as long.

Printing or Saving in Classical Scores Library

Classical Scores Library displays scores in an integrated reader on your screen; you can adjust the view using the controls on the reader.

Sometimes you may prefer to print the score or to save it as a PDF. Read these tips first!

Select the printer icon from the upper right corner of the viewer:

The print icon lets you print or save!

A print selection box will appear. You can print your currently displayed page, the current section of the score, or the whole score:

Printing a section is usually easier than printing a very long score.

To print, choose a printer as your destination. To save the file, choose Save as PDF as your destination. (If you don't see that option, try clicking "See more...")

Check the options under "Destination"

IMPORTANT! Before printing or saving, you may need to change the image size to fit it neatly on the page. How much you have to change it will depend on your computer and the document.

Look under More settings for the Scale option. Change it to Custom, then adjust the scale percentage until the preview image looks right.

Chage the Scale to Custom, then adjust the size percentage.

Don't print or save until you get this setting adjusted!
