One of the gods of free Internet audiobooks. A marvelous selection that is still updated. Items can be downloaded as zip files or indidvidual files, mp3 and ogg vorbis available. You can even volunteer to read books yourself to make available to others. They must be in the public domain. When available, this site will link to the free Gutenberg text, Wikipedia entries, and other resources. Quality of narrators is generally high.

About 650 human-narrated books and almost 400 computer-narrated books. Go to the advanced search and from category "Audio Book, human-read" or "Audio Book, computer-generated" from the pull-down menu. There is a great vaiety of audio file formats, from MP3, Speex Audio, Ogg Vorbis, and MP4. There are not professional quality narrators, but enjoyable none-the-less. Much of their content comes from other providers such as Literal Systems and LibriVox.

A collection supporting Florida's education system. Some might like the ability to search by reading level. While the collection is mostly brief poems for younger children, and the interface leaves something to be desired, there are treasures here. There is a very nice Northanger Abbey, The Blithedale Romance, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and other fun classics.

Requires registration, but has free content. A fairly good selection with a bit of fluff. the 4kbps version only can be downloaded for free, which have very poor sound quality, but if you really want it you will get used to it. Stron in classic adventures such as Twain, London, Defoe, Verne, etc.

Small site with strength in philosophy and classic political science. A few literary classics as well.

While this is a pay site, there are a number of free items under the "free stuff" tab. Watch out for the abridged version--they are not desirable. If you become truly addicted to free audiobooks, sign up for their e-mail bulletin. They link to free auod all over the Internet.

A fairly small site at this time. Includes some Lewis Carroll and re-writes of fairy tales and mythology with some classic poetry. On the whole , suitable for younger listeners.
