Open Access

What is Open Access and why should it matter to you?

Other Ways to Publish Open Access

If you wish to publish Open Access in a journal but don't have funds to publish and it is not covered by an active CSUSB OA Read & Publish agreement you can:

1. Contact Jennifer Beamer, Scholarly Communication Librarian to help you check your journal permission and then deposit your Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) in our institutional repository Scholar Works @ CSUSB where it will be made discoverable on Google Scholar along with your publishers version of the article.
 or

2. You can Contact your department chair or dean to see if there are department funds available to support OA publishing.

  • For new faculty, OA APCs may be considered qualifying startup fund expenses.

3. Check to see if any co-authors have Read & Publish agreements through their institution.  The agreements require the corresponding author to be a member of the institution; it does not have to be the first author.
4. Contact the journal to see if they will discount or waive the APC because of insufficient author funding.
5. Identify outside funding sources - try this list of research funders and institutions worldwide that cover open access article processing charges (APCs).
6. When applying for grants, don’t forget to write APCs into the grant budget.
