The SciFinder-n Database: To Find Chemical Reactions

A basic introduction to SciFinder-n, the database produced by the American Chemical Society.

Search by: Substance Name, CAS Registry Number (unique number assigned to just one substance), Molecular Formula, and more.  The results of your Reactions search will also lead you to substances and references (scholarly journal articles and other documents) for reactions.

THE REACTIONS SEARCH - BY SUBSTANCE NAME

Sample search: Enter hydroquinone in the Reactions search box and click the search button. More than 32,000 search results are retrieved. Narrow your search results by choosing options from the left side of the screen, for example, Reactant or Reagent under Substance Role.

Click on View Reaction Detail in the bottom left corner of one of the Reaction Summary boxes to see detailed information on the reaction including the steps to recreate it.

REFERENCES FOR REACTIONS

To find additional references for selected reactions (only one appears on the right side of the Reaction Summary box), click in the small check box in the upper left hand corner of a Reaction Summary box to select it.  After selecting one or more Reaction Summaries, at the top of the screen, click on the References button, then in the pop up menu, Selected Results.

In SciFinder-n, all types of documents are included in a References search.  On the left side of the next screen, under Document Type, click the Journal box to limit your References search results to scholarly journal articles.

You can narrow your list of results further by adding additional limits from the left side of the screen, for example:  Language - EnglishPublication Year - Set to last 5 years, etc., as shown below.

TO FIND FULL TEXT

Once you've narrowed your search and found reference you like, click the Full Text button in the bottom left corner of a References box, then in the pop up menu, click Search for Full Text from Pfau Library.
