This will vary depending on class interactions and questions received, and can range from 30-45 min, but plan for an average of 40 min of class time devoted to the Library Ambassador presentation.
The Library Ambassadors DO NOT cover advanced research topics. Topics NOT covered include: use of specific databases, overview of citation styles, advanced database search techniques, planning the research process, etc. Remember, these presentations are not meant to replace a librarian class visit; these visits are conducted by peer mentors and are meant to act as a general introduction to library services. If you require a more advanced presentation, for example, in preparation for a research project, please request a librarian visit instead.
Ensure you can devote approximately 40 min of class time to the Library Ambassadors. Ensure that you are logistically prepared to let the Library Ambassadors use the computer/projector or to share their screens.
It is faculty discretion on whether to announce that there will be Library Ambassadors visitors to their classes ahead of time. In our experience, attendance has been lower when students know they will have a library visit that session. Therefore, consider assigning a simple credit assignment to the visit (e.g. participation, asking a question) or not disclosing the visit ahead of time.
Zoom/Virtual Library Ambassador visits will cover the exact same content as in-person visits and operate largely the same way. Library Ambassadors will still conduct the Kahoot activity via Zoom, and will distribute a Qualtrics survey at the end rather than a paper survey.
Yes! However, we currently only offer Zoom sessions for classes held at PDC.
Please ensure that the Library Ambassadors have access to the computer and projector. If a Zoom session, please ensure they have screen-share authorization.
The Library Ambassador visit will be structured as follows:
The Library Ambassadors will introduce themselves and talk a little about their academic and personal backgrounds (e.g. clubs, majors, research experience). They will also talk about their personal connection to the library.
The Library Ambassadors will lead a tutorial about basic resources and services available to students. They will cover:
In an informal and fun check-for-understanding, the Library Ambassadors will then facilitate a brief Kahoot session. Please encourage all your students to participate.
The Library Ambassadors will then discuss the Student Mentoring Program (i.e. what it is, how to join, their experience in it, etc.).
The Library Ambassadors will finally open the floor up to questions. They will answer to the best of their ability. Please keep in mind, they will not be able to answer advanced research questions, and will direct students with more involved questions to a librarian.
Prior to leaving, the Library Ambassadors will distribute a short paper survey (Qualtrics survey if conducting a session through Zoom). Please encourage your students to complete these, as they provide important data for this program.
