The ends of the book shelves have sequence numbers, so you can which direction they run, plus call number ranges, so you can tell what call numbers are on each side of the shelf.

Locating the book

Look for the Location, Call No., and Status of the book.

If the Status is "Checked Out," then someone else already has it. You can look at the due date to see when it should come back.

If the book is available, write down the call number and the location. Or, you can use the QR code to scan that information into your smartphone.

Click on the Location to view a map of that shelving area. For example, here the's 4th Floor location.

Books are shelved alpha-numerically, by call number. Start with the letters, then work through the numbers, in sequence, until you find the book.

For our example above, which starts with QA, be aware that there are call numbers starting Q, QA, QB, QC, etc. So the first area you'll need to find is the QA's.

The first number in the sequence is always a whole number; for example, look for QA 612.2 in the QA six hundreds, not the six thousands or the sixties.

Check the signs on the ends of the shelves. Our sample book will be on the left side of this shelf:

Sign reads: Mathematics QA; Astronomy QB.

Once you find the right shelf, look for the labels on the spines or covers of the books. Our book is the fourth one in the picture below:

Books in call number order, with spine labels showing.

Take the book to the 1st floor Check-Out Desk to check it out. You will need your Coyote OneCard (CSUSB ID card).
