Project Takes Off

  • Terry Cannon applies for and receives grant from California Humanities Council
  • Exhibit tours California venues, such as the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College Library, Institute for Socio-Economic Justice & Progressive Community Development Center (Brawley, CA), and the Pomona Public Library.
  • In 2007, the California Council for the Humanities (CCH) was awarded a national prize from the Federation of Humanities Councils for excellence in public humanities programming for having funded the LBHP.
  • Dr. Francisco Balderrama opens special history class, Mexican American Baseball: An Oral History Approach, which engaged students in collecting oral histories from local amateur and professional baseball players.
  • Oral histories recorded by students and deposited at the library at CSULA.
  • Collection of video-taped interviews, photos, and artifacts was established.
  • Dr. Richard Santillan joins the project and becomes the leading historian and editor for the book series.
  • Idea for a book on Mexican American Baseball in Los Angeles came up.

The Project moves to CSUSB

  • In 2007 Cesar Caballero was appointed Dean of the John M. Pfau library at CSUSB.
  • The Project followed Caballero to CSUSB, where it has resided since then.
  • Baseball player reunions were held where images were scanned and artifacts collected, 2009 -2010.
  • The Project has resulted in an extensive collection of over 20,000 images and over 100 artifacts.

Dodger's Stadium

  • On December 13, 2022, an opening reception was held for the Latino Baseball History Project (LBHP) exhibit at the Stadium Club in Dodger Stadium.   About forty invitees attended the reception.   The exhibit consisted of four large exhibit cases replete with baseball artifacts, images, and captions.
