The Gray Test

A call to action from Dr. Kishonna Gray (#CiteHerWork: Marginalizing Women in Academic and Journalistic Writing) to make the work of women and marginalized people in academia more visible led Wendy Laura Belcher to propose the "Gray Test."

Use the Gray Test to assess the inclusivity of scholarship by others or as a way to reflect on your own work and citational practices. As a starting point,

Does the article cite the scholarship of at least two women?
Does the article cite the work of at least two scholars of color?
Does the article actually engage with and discuss the work of these scholars, whether in the text or within foot/end notes (and not only as a parenthetical citation)?

Activities & Assignments

Politics of Citation Discussion Activity
Using three example excerpts on citation practice and the experiences of specific scholars, participants will interrogate and discuss how whiteness and other oppressions impact citation practice using a series of questions.
Whose Shoulders Are You Standing On? Inclusive Citation Practices in Literature Reviews
When writing a research paper, it can be easy to overlook the human side of scholarship – how being cited in a study (or not) can have real, material consequences, and how social structures can systematically exclude certain people from scholarship. This activity and lesson explores these ideas and gives students strategies for making their literature reviews more inclusive.

Analyzing a Bibliography
Classroom activity to encourage reflective analysis of what we expect to be cited in an academic source, who is cited in an academic source, and what this tells us about what kinds of knowledge are considered worth reproducing.
