When you installed Zotero it added a Zotero menu to Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
The first time you have Zotero insert a citation into your document, you will need to allow Zotero to access Microsoft Word (pop-up window) and then choose the citation style you want to use (another pop-up window). The example below is in APA style 7th edition.
Inserting an in-text citation creates a live link between the citation in your paper and the corresponding captured item in Zotero.

- THE RED BOX -
EXAMPLE:
"Anhydrobiosis is defined as dehydration tolerance, which is the ability of a species to survive almost complete loss of body water." [place cursor here]
1. Place your cursor where you want the citation to go.
2. Click the Add/Edit Citation button (shown above).
3. In the pop-up red box (shown smaller than actual size below) type some words from the article's title or the author's name.
4. When you find the correct article, press enter/return.
5. In APA, if you are using a direct quote as in this example, you will need a page number, so click after the year to bring up the window where you can add it.
RESULT:
“Anhydrobiosis is defined as dehydration tolerance, which is the ability of a species to survive almost complete loss of body water.” (Roszkowska et al., 2023, p. 1)
- THE CLASSIC VIEW -
1. Follow steps 1-3 in Method 1, but when the red box pops up, click the arrow next to the Z, then click Classic View.
Now you can see all of your captured items which makes it easier to find the right one.
2. Click on the item to add the page number, if necessary, then click the OK button.
- DO YOU PREFER THE CLASSIC VIEW? -
To bypass the red box and always use the Classic View, see the instructions on the Optional Changes to Zotero Settings tab of this guide.
Sometimes you need to insert multiple in-text citations in one spot. Use the Classic View and click the Multiple Sources button.
